History of the Chamber of
Commerce
The first Chambers of Commerce were founded in 1599
in Marseille, France & Brugge,
Belgium. The world's oldest English-speaking Chamber of Commerce is that of
Glasgow, Scotland, established in 1783. The National Association of Neighborhood Chambers of Commerce
was organized primarily to promote the interests of Neighborhood
Chambers of Commerce Members everywhere.
Today, there are many different Chambers of Commerce
in the United States
who's membership range from a few dozen to well over 300,000 (as is the
case with the Paris Chamber of Commerce & Industry). A Chamber of Commerce
can range in size from a single city or town Chamber, to a County Chamber,
Regional Chamber, or even an International Chamber of Commerce.
Neighborhood Chambers of Commerce are made up of individuals &
associations that have common legislative, community or commercial interests. Business owners in
your city/county/region have at least a hundred Chambers to choose from
when looking for specific membership benefits. There are local, regional, national,
industry, ethnic, racial chambers and religion based Chambers of
Commerce, each provide a slightly different mix of
advantages, services, and networking opportunities for their
members.
There are approximately 11,800
Neighborhood Chambers of Commerce in the United States at this time. Of those, approximately
8,500 have paid staff members who manage the organization. The
professional staff at a Chambers may be a part-time paid executive or even
unpaid volunteers. The largest Chambers of Commerce in the
United States have as many as 150 employees.
The
most significant difference between Neighborhood Chambers of
Commerce and 'other' Chambers of Commerce is that we promote
initiatives that support overall neighborhood health - not the
corporations initiatives who pay premium membership rates to
manipulate the vote of our members to outsource neighborhood jobs
to countries who most humans consider human slavers world wide
(India, China, Mexico, Southeast Asia, etc). Our
neighborhoods need jobs and corporations who have taken control of
our government have actively lobbied to outsource the middle
classes jobs to foreign markets who pay little or no wages to
people who are working in inhuman production lines for a few
dollars a day - something American workers clearly can not compete
with as the unemployment rate has sky rocketed due to outsourcing
over the last 8 years.
